The Need for Advanced Methods for Cleaning Concrete

The requirement for advanced methods for cleaning concrete is based on the need to have proper preparation for concrete repairs, to reduce slip and fall hazards at refueling areas, and for general appearance.

Ever more stringent ground water and disposal rules by Local, State, and U.S. EPA bodies are precluding the use of pressure washing or scrubbing with a degreaser and rinsing the wash solution to storm sewers.

CR SOLUTIONS, Inc., researched, tested and brought together a family of products and processes that have been proven effective in handling hydrocarbon and other wastes, capturing those wastes, and treating them so that the wastes and the cleaning materials may be disposed in landfills, land farms, or incinerated.

Each Local Government or State Government may have differing regulations for landfills so that the test reports along with approvals by other government bodies normally will obtain a quick approval.

REPAIRS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. Cleaning

An absorbent is placed in a dam around the area of concrete to be cleaned. An emulsifying degreaser is applied by spray and broom or by power washing the concrete. A second solution of microbes, buffers and nutrients is applied over the wet surface. All liquids are then absorbed and placed in a dumpster.

Water and additional microbes are added to the container and the microbes will digest the oils to the point that the Total Hydrocarbon Content is below the allowable level. The water may then be drained and the remaining solids taken to a landfill as non hazardous waste.

Concrete repairs should be made to prevent fuel and oil intrusion through cracks and failed expansion joints. Cleaning and microbial remediation should precede any repairs. 2. Overlays for Slip and Fall Resistance

In areas that the concrete has worn from use and there has been long term exposure to diesel and motor oils, resurfacing with a slip resistant concrete overlay should be considered. In addition to the concrete cleaning procedure, we recommend that the surface be scarified to a depth below the "oil line."

Over a period of years of exposure, fuel and oils will reach some depth into the slab - the depth is dependent on the concrete density, exposure and length of time. No resurfacing will adhere without reaching clean concrete below the oil.

3. Maintenance

After initial cleanup and repairs, CR SOLUTIONS, INC. can supply the necessary absorbents and agents necessary for in house maintenance or local cleaning services to keep the facility clean and dry.

Clean up is especially easy from impervious slip resistant concrete overlays since the oil and fuel will not soak into the surface.
